Objectives: To explore the role of museums in creating community cohesion and identity.

Key Findings: The museums were found to contribute to the Scottish Government’s National Performance Framework, as well as to the development of physical, human, social, economic and cultural capital within their communities.

Methods: Qualitative case studies of five museums across Scotland. Focus groups and interviews were held with 58 individuals, including museum staff (paid and volunteer), museum users and partner organisations.
